This page is under construction!!!
I use a service called MyDNS.COM.
They are a virtual DNS server. I have the Helmuth.Net domain parked
there. MyDNS.COM does web forwarding in
addition to e-mail forwarding.
Here is how it works:
I will use myself as an example. My e-mail address is dave@helmuth.net
. So I set up the web address of dave.helmuth.net.
Notice that it does not have a WWW in it or anything like that. Well, I
run my own web server
A few notes about putting your web page on my server:
- I run an little Linux based server. It has an e-mail server and a
web server. (The server is called SME Server. It is VERY well
built, check it out! http://www.e-smith.org)
- If you use some other tool or FTP to move your web page over, the ftp.helmuth.net
should work. If it doesn't for some reason, try FTP'ing to computer1.dyndns.org.
The userid that you were given is what you should use to login to the FTP
server as well. The directory to place the files in is WWW. The
main page should be called index.htm, that is the only start page that the
server recognizes.
- Right now I don't have any limits on how much can be loaded out there, but
I only have about 9 gig of space for web pages. If that starts to fill
up, I'll either start up a collection for more, or I might have to institute
quotas.
Key Benefits
- You get a cool new Helmuth.Net web address.
- Your Helmuth.Net web address is permanent. If you change
ISP's (move from AOL to Mindspring say) your address doesn't
change. You just tell me what the new one is and I will change
it. No more broadcasts to the whole world about your address changing.
- Have a little fun!
